10 Questions with Cate:

1. What is one movie you can practically quote from start to finish?

Billy Madison with Adam Sandler, it’s been my favourite movie since I was about 15 years old. I quite often quote these lines throughout the day:

i. Billy: “How about you sideburns, you want some of this milk?”

ii. Janitor: “I’d rather have a beer.”

iii. “Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

2. What is your favourite holiday destination?

I’ve been lucky enough to holiday in so many different places – from Cambodia and Indonesia to the Middle East to Europe to the Caribbean – but my favorite place will always be the Outer Banks, North Carolina. There is something so relaxing and beautiful about those barrier islands, no matter what time of year you visit. In fact, my favorite time to visit is October – December.

3. What is your favourite hobby or pastime?

Reading. Since age 3 I’ve had my nose in a book and it’s never really changed. I love reading and listening to music after a busy day. My latest hobby has been mastering the art of making my own pizza, true Neapolitan style with my new pizza oven. This is really the only thing I like cooking, see answer to question 8.

4. Would you rather be an Olympic gold medallist or an astronaut?

Olympic gold medallist. When I was a kid, I thought I wanted to grow up and run track in the Olympics – that rapidly changed in my teenage years. Also, space gives me the creeps and it hurts my brain to think about leaving the Earth’s atmosphere.

5. Favourite weird (but brilliant) food combo?

Frosted flakes on a peanut butter sandwich. Similarly crisps on a deli sandwich is superb. If you know, you know.

6. Have you ever met a celebrity?

I’ve met a couple of celebrities, mostly by total fluke. I met Vince Vaughn one time in a bar after he sponsored a comedy show, he was so tall our picture looks like a deepfake. My favorite celebrity meeting was the day I got to spend on the set of the TV show NCIS. I met the whole cast and got to hang out with them in between takes. Mark Harmon enlightened me to the nonstop food parade that is craft services on set.

7. If you could live in any decade, which would you choose?

I love the fact that I grew up in the 80s and 90s (for so many different reasons, but mostly the music) so I don’t think I would want to live in any other decade

8. What’s your favourite meal to cook?

The one I don’t cook.

9. What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Oof, that’s a tough one, I love singing along to every song despite my aggressively terrible voice. My favorites include Queen, Taylor Swift, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac but my go-to would have to be You Can’t Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones.

10. What’s the worst hairstyle you’ve ever had?

The first time I ever went to a proper hairdresser to get a styled haircut was when I was about 14 years old. This was when “The Rachel” cut from Friends was wildly popular. My cut ended up in a full-on mullet, business in the front – party in the back, it was outrageous.
