Geollect Team in Focus – January 2022

Hello there, I’m Matt, I’m the business development manager here at Geollect. I started for this truly unique business in May last year after taking on a few different roles during COVID. I’m happy to say I haven’t looked back.

Before anything else I want to echo the words of others. This is a special business in which I genuinely feel like I am part of a family where my voice matters and I have a part to play in business decisions. It was a bit like being thrown in at the deep end having to learn about Mapbox, Esri, AIS, ML, GIS, Port, Starboard the list goes on but the patience (Lots of patience) and support from everyone in the business got me ship shape in no time. Full sail ahead on the good ship Geollect.

Coming into the business it was great to be working with Connor again, having had the pleasure at a previous technology company. From the very first chat with Connor about the role I was so excited, by the time I finished my 3 hour long “20 minute” call with Rich and Cate I already felt like I’d signed and been at the company for years!

Unlike other roles I have had, every day at Geollect is different. While many businesses are asking the same questions, the route they follow to get to the answer can be wildly different. Seeing the various datasets and data types that can be brought together in platforms to help businesses efficiently visualise, understand and act on data, still regularly blows my mind. I love having the opportunity to talk to businesses around the world about their challenges and the varying ways they use data in their businesses.

Since starting 8 months ago, my role is already evolving! I wanted to be more involved to help with strategy and helping the company develop. Off the back of this I have taken on responsibility for market & product research, preparing reports for the SLT on new potential areas of interest. I most recently wrote an article on safe ports as part of my research into Charterparty law.

I’ve always been a bit of a nerd regarding technology and had I’ve always had a passion for problem solving. I get to see both in action every day within this dynamic business, I wish I could have been there from day 1, but as they say better late than never! I don’t know what the future holds for this amazing business and all of the current and future Geolegends that will get to be a part of it but I’m excited to see our progress and can’t wait to see what’s next.
