Geollect team in focus – Tom Hardcastle

After spending a few months interning as an intelligence analyst for Geollect I am really excited to see what the future has in store for me. My time at Geollect so far has been a fantastic experience. The start-up nature of the company provides a fast-paced, all-hands-on-deck working environment, which immerses you into the team quickly. I have been made to feel very welcome by all of the team members, who will always take time out of their day to teach you something new, or involve you in a new project.

I have been lucky enough to join the intelligence team, primarily working on investigations for a variety of clients. We work quickly to gather and analyze the data to solve the complex puzzles presented to us. This allows us to provide clients with a bespoke service. The diverse backgrounds of the team members, involving both military and academia, offers me the insights needed to translate the data into actionable intelligence.

My own background is in academia, as I am currently studying an MA in Conflict, Security and Development at Exeter University. Taking modules such as the International Relations of the Middle East and North Africa provides the contextual understanding of global affairs and conflict, necessary to be an asset to an intelligence team. My MA dissertation focuses on the relationship between the mining of natural resources and civil conflict. With the expansion of the electric power industry, relying on these resources, it is highly likely that this relationship could deteriorate in the near future. This piece of research will allow me to develop my skills as an analyst and become a more valuable member of the Geollect intelligence team.

Outside of the office, I enjoy sports, spending time outdoors, and socializing with friends. The social aspect of Geollect is one of the company’s key strengths, allowing the development of a cohesive team. Playing football with some of the staff was one of the highlights of my internship, although I have some improvement to achieve if I want to be the best in the intelligence team!
